As a young man, Cory Easton knew he wanted to work in health care and help a lot of people, but he didn’t feel he had the academic chops to be a doctor. So he became more interested in the business of health and, ultimately, in how to ensure people got the medicine they needed at the right time, for the right reasons and at the right price.

This Giving Day, donors to the School of Public Health showed their love and support, leading to the school’s biggest ever day of donations by far.

The Mickey Dale Family Foundation has donated $60,000 to the School of Public Health to establish a graduate fellowship that supports students working to understand and subsequently transform attitudes and practices around organ, tissue and cell transplantation in the United States.

Along with higher health care costs overall, Americans spend an average of $1,300 per person on prescription drugs - more than any other country in the world. Part of the problem lies in the complexity of how prescription drug prices are set. They are determined by complex negotiations between pharmaceutical companies, pharmacy benefit managers and health insurance companies.

During the University of Maryland’s annual 24-hour fundraising event, alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends raised an impressive $177,644 for School of Public Health research initiatives, scholarships, educational programs and public health practice activities.

Karabelle Pizzigati was a life-long champion for children and families, especially those from underserved communities.

This commitment is now bolstered by Michael Sullivan and Nancy Moseley's $500K gift to the Karabelle Pizzigati Initiative in Advocacy for Children, Youth and Families.

Greg and Kimberly Pappas have established the Emily Pappas '22 Family Maryland Promise Scholarship with a  $125,000 gift in honor of their daughter Emily. It will support undergraduate kinesiology students in the School of Public Health, with preference given to students from underrepresented populations, low-income and first-generation college students. 

The University of Maryland School of Public Health has surpassed its fundraising goal for the University of Maryland's campaign, Fearless Ideas: The Campaign for Maryland. The School's record $26.3M raised reflects a 188% increase from our original goal of $14M for the period July 2014 through December 2021.

If the last two years have done anything, they have highlighted the importance of public health and the increased need for attention to global health across almost all aspects of our interconnected society.

But Rachel Bell ‘93 (Accounting) and Anthony Samer already knew this. 

While it wasn’t the goodbye Dr. Robert S. Gold hoped for (due to COVID), the School of Public Health recognized his retirement from the University of Maryland and celebrated his legacy as the SPH’s founding dean with a heartfelt Zoom tribute in May.
