Since its creation, the importance of a strong family unit has been the foundation of the Jeanette Spier Beavers Endowed Memorial Scholarship. Established by Lois Spier Gray to memorialize her sister Jeanette Spier Beavers, the funds used to establish the scholarship were initially meant to support Lois herself. Jeanette had set the money aside to help Lois and her husband, who was suffering from Parkinson's disease. 

Alice Munkhoff Horowitz PhD '92 believes strongly in the power of health literacy to address health inequalities. And with a new gift pledged over five years, Dr. Horowitz will ensure that the Rima E. Rudd Dissertation Research Award in Health Literacy can continue to support the next generation of researchers who advance the science of health literacy.

The School of Public Health held its annual Dean’s Recognition Ceremony on April 30. The virtual event served to showcase and honor members of the school’s community with the Distinguished Terrapin Award and the inaugural Early Career Award. 

Seven School of Public Health students were recognized with the Gold “Creativity in Crisis” Prize on Friday, April 23, during the Innovation in Public Health Seminar. The award included a monetary prize of $750. Four more students received honorable mention.

With COVID-19 dramatically demonstrating the need for a robust, well-funded and equity-focused public health system, a new $1.5 million gift to the University of Maryland School of Public Health (SPH) will support efforts to prepare a new generation of public health leaders—a diverse group ready to confront challenges ranging from disease pandemics to systemic racism, the climate crisis and more.  

When the world started to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year, there was little information on the racial differences of incidence and mortality.

But health equity experts like Dr. Stephen Thomas knew that this information was crucial to documenting and addressing potential racial disparities.

"As states began to report race-based data, we started to see a bleak picture," said Dr. Thomas, a professor of health policy and management and the director of the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity (MCHE).

With a $130,000 gift, Joy N. Rose '75 established the James H. Humphrey Published Research Endowment. The fund is named for Rose's late father, an accomplished and renowned educator, a leader in the field of physical education and a professor emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology.
