This May, the University of Maryland School of Public Health recognized five outstanding members of the SPH community. Four individuals received the Distinguished Terrapin Award, the school's highest honor, and another received the Early Career Award. The awardees were recognized at the Dean's Recognition Ceremony on May 13, 2022 which was attended by members of the SPH Dean's Council, supporters and friends of the school, along with faculty, staff and students. Anomalies in the monsoon season increase rates of diarrheal disease among young children in Nepal, according to a new University of Maryland study that could help lead to a development of early-warning system for climate sensitive infectious diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, and cholera.

Experts say that it’s not a matter of IF we will face another pandemic, only where and when. Public health emergency preparedness is more important than ever. 

Each year during Convocation, the University of Maryland School of Public Health recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence and dedication in their educational and public health service activities.

This year’s Convocation, which took place on Wednesday, May 4, honored more than 180 students who received scholarships, fellowships and awards in 2021 and 2022.

Students were nominated by their respective departments for this special recognition and were congratulated by their department chairs and Dean Boris Lushniak.
