$1.5 M Gift Will Expand Students’ Public Health Experiences

With COVID-19 dramatically demonstrating the need for a robust, well-funded and equity-focused public health system, a new $1.5 million gift to the University of Maryland School of Public Health (SPH) will support efforts to prepare a new generation of public health leaders—a diverse group ready to confront challenges ranging from disease pandemics to systemic racism, the climate crisis and more.

We offer an undergraduate and graduate course to build background knowledge and practical skills in health literacy. Alumni Profile: Victory Plaine, BS '19

Victory Plaine (Tori), a community health major, was chosen as the student commencement speaker for the December 2019 graduating class. She has excelled in all of her courses and remained on the Dean’s List while maintaining a full-time work schedule as a clinical consultant at Clinique. Tori hopes to further her career in community health by working to decrease incidence rates of STD/STIs throughout the state.

Alumni Profile: Meaghan McHugh, PhD '18

Meaghan McHugh earned a PhD in Behavioral and Community Health at the University of Maryland's School of Public Health in the spring of 2018. She serves as Director of the Office of Evaluation at Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in Rockville, Maryland.

Student Profile: Zeina Alkhalaf, PhD

Zeina Mohamad Alkhalaf didn’t plan to go into public health, at least not at first. She received a degree in communications and public relations and conducted humanitarian work through a non-profit. But at the age of 23, Zeina was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder that affects around 200,000 individuals in the US every year and can lead to infertility, diabetes and even cancer.

Alumni Profile: Brittany Chambers, BS '11

Brittany Chambers graduated from the University of Maryland's School of Public Health in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in community health. She went on to earn her Master of Public Health degree at Drexel University's School of Public Health, where she co-authored two peer-reviewed articles and completed an eight-month Health Disparities Research Fellowship. She also completed a six-month Emerging Leaders Program from Mount Sinai Health System.
