A new study from the UMD School of Public Health examines the experiences of sub-Saharan African children from Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Tanzania during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a global public health crisis and poses unprecedented challenges to the national health and lives of our residents. The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics held a seminar series on the epidemiology of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US, the state of Maryland and the world. The seminar series featured presentations delivered by frontline public health experts, community members and epidemiologists.

An international group of scientists is calling for a “paradigm shift” in how we combat airborne pathogens such as COVID-19. The 40 researchers from 14 countries, including Dr. Donald K. Milton from the University of Maryland School of Public Health, are demanding universal recognition that infections can be prevented by improving indoor ventilation systems. 

“Policy change not climate change” is a slogan that climate activist Greta Thunberg and environmental justice advocates have echoed to policymakers. 

Congratulations to Kirsten Peterman, a Master of Arts in Kinesiology student studying Cognitive Motor Neuroscience, for her second place finish in the Public Health Research Day Poster Presentation. Her poster is titled "Will There Be a Season? The Impact of COVID-19 on Anxiety Within NCAA Student-Athletes and Non-Athlete University Students."

In their recent article in Public Health Reports, Heather Platter, Katya Kaplow, and Cynthia Baur report findings and implications from their Community Health Literacy Assessment (CHLA) conducted in Maryland from January to August of 2018.

A year that exposed how our health intertwines with everything from racism to social media misinformation taught valuable lessons that shouldn’t be lost amid the relief of increasing vaccinations against COVID-19.

Seven School of Public Health students were recognized with the Gold “Creativity in Crisis” Prize on Friday, April 23, during the Innovation in Public Health Seminar. The award included a monetary prize of $750. Four more students received honorable mention.

Maryland has one of the largest and most innovative alternative payment models for hospitals in the country, known as the Global Budget Revenue (GBR) program. A research team at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, led by Liyang Xie, who is now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, explored the program’s impact on pediatric hospital use and health outcomes.
