A new study out today in Health Affairs shows that state-funded health insurance coverage of abortion is a crucial factor in access, particularly for Black and Hispanic people and people in low-income communities.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – In the United States, wealthy people live on average 10 years longer than poor people, and Black people can expect to live an average of 5 years less than white people. Now, thanks to a $3.5 million grant, researchers will examine why these disparities persist – and how to address them.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Who hasn’t sat in a medical office, listening to computer keys clacking while their provider rapidly types up notes, wondering what they are spending so much time writing about? For doctors, who have always written clinical care notes but increasingly must spend time cataloging billing details, this additional documentation is a major source of job dissatisfaction and burnout.

Two students from the UMD School of Public Health were selected as 2024-25 ambassadors in the “This is Public Health” (TIPH) program, hosted by the Association of Schools & Programs of Public Health (ASPPH).

As an elementary school student at West Baltimore’s P.S. 103, young Thurgood Marshall was so rambunctious that his teachers often sent him to a quiet room in the basement, where he was instructed to read the U.S. Constitution. By the time he finished elementary school in 1921, the late U.S. Supreme Court justice later said, he’d memorized it.

At the annual Maryland Research Excellence Celebration on April 16, more than 200 outstanding scholars and researchers, nominated by their deans, were recognized for their research success and visibility.
