Maryland has one of the largest and most innovative alternative payment models for hospitals in the country, known as the Global Budget Revenue (GBR) program. A research team at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, led by Liyang Xie, who is now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, explored the program’s impact on pediatric hospital use and health outcomes.

Over 24 hours on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, the University of Maryland School of Public Health community came together virtually to support our research initiatives, scholarships and educational programs. 278 donors—alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students—gave a total of $220,724, an increase of more than 137 percent from the previous year. That placed the School of Public Health at #2 on the leaderboard after Athletics for most funds raised during Giving Day.

Dr. Jie Chen, a professor of Health Policy and Management at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, received $2.3 million in funding from the NIH-National Institute on Aging for her R01 project focused on improving care coordination practices for racial and ethnic minorities who are at high risk for or have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or related dementias.

Amanda Hemmer is a Senior Health Care Consultant at Guidehouse, Inc., a global consulting firm providing services to public and commercial clients. She works within the company’s Healthcare Strategy segment and partners with commercial clients, including hospitals and health systems going through transformational change.

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly altered the research field, leading to institutions struggling to keep career development connections and networks. The virus may also contribute to increasing the research divide, specifically for underrepresented Early Career Researchers (ECR’s) and doctoral students. 

Racial and ethnic groups who are underrepresented in Health Management, Services and Policy fields tend to face unique obstacles when it comes to career success. 

In medical research, diversity matters. It is key to equity in health promotion, health care delivery and treatment. 

However, the health care field continues to struggle to recruit African Americans for research studies, according to a new journal article from Health Policy and Management Professor Stephen Thomas.
