The University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and the School of Public Health announced today the awardees of their inaugural Healthy Places Seed Grants - a funding program designed to spark innovative research around the challenges of building healthy, equitable communities. Eight projects received grants through the program.

Professor Amelia Arria, director of the Center on Young Adult Health and Development and an expert on the risk of substance use problems among adolescents and young adults, discusses how this change may impact the health of teens and adults.

The Terrapin Club recently named Michelle Jamin '16, Elise Nguyen '17, '18 and Dominique Waddell '15 to its 30 Under 30 Class of 2023. The honor recognizes the SPH graduates' impact in their communities and careers while supporting the university and embodying Maryland Pride.

Faculty from the School of Public Health will receive unprecedented funding to tackle some of society's biggest challenges, including a $3M grant to create an international alliance focused on alleviating food, energy and water insecurity, protecting environmental and global public health and bolstering community resilience in a changing climate.

Horowitz, a research professor with the Department of Behavioral and Community Health, is a leading advocate and researcher in dental public health and health literacy efforts.

The Graduate School recently named three School of Public Health doctoral students as recipients of the Outstanding Graduate Assistant Award: Amara Channell Doig, MPH, Ph.D. ’23; Elsie Essien, MPH, Ph.D. ’24; and Hongjie Ke, Ph.D. ’24. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions graduate assistants provide to students, faculty and the university as a whole.

The four-year study will combine national data from sources like the U.S. Census with feedback received during individual and group interviews with African American communities, which face greater obstacles to cancer prevention, detection, treatment and survival. 

The Gamma Zeta chapter of the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Public Health is pleased to announce its 2022 inductees. At the virtual induction ceremony and poster awards reception on May 6, 2022, Dean Boris Lushniak, Principal Associate Dean Dushanka Kleinman, inducted 17 students, four faculty members, two alumni and one honorary member, Dr. Dianna Abney.
