Become a Public Health Science Major

The UMD School of Public Health offers the Bachelor of Science in Public Health Science at both the College Park campus and at the Universities at Shady Grove campus. 

The Public Health Science major is not a limited enrollment program. You can declare the major when first accepted to UMD or once you are enrolled. The Shady Grove program is available to students in their junior and senior year, and does have specific prerequisites and requirements.

Ready to declare your major? 

Students who have been enrolled at UMD for at least one semester who wish to declare Public Health Science as your primary or second major on the College Park campus must complete all steps in the same term.

Step 1: Attend a Change of Major Workshop

First, register for and complete our change of major workshopChange of Major workshops are offered multiple times each semester (including summers), but they do fill quickly. Don't see any available dates? Check back every few days. 

 

1. Register for a PHSC Change of Major

 

COVID-19 Update: The PHSC Change of Major Workshop is completed asynchronously through an ELMS course. A live meeting with a PHSC advisor is not required for the change of major workshop. By the morning of your scheduled workshop, you will receive instructions by email to your Terpmail address. You will have 2 business days to complete the ELMS modules at your own pace.

    Step 2: Make a new Graduation Plan 

    After you complete the PHSC Change of Major modules, you will need to register for and complete a graduation plan workshop with the School of Public Health’s Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA). 

     

    2. Register for an SPH Graduation Plan Workshop

     

    COVID-19 Update: SPH Graduation Plan Workshops are currently offered through an asynchronous ELMS course. By the morning of your scheduled workshop, you will receive instructions by email. 

    Next Steps

    At the end of the Graduation Plan workshop, you will submit your plan. If you are not a student-athlete or on Academic Probation/Dismissal your plan will be reviewed and your major declared within 10 business days. 

    Keep in mind you will not be able to register for certain restricted courses until your major is officially changed to Public Health Science. 

    Student-Athletes and Students on Academic Probation/Dismissal
    • Student-athletes must meet with Bryan Pointer after they have attended the Academic Plan workshop before their major will be declared.
    • Students on Academic Probation/Dismissal must meet with Taylor Sanders after they have attended the Academic Plan workshop before their major will be declared.

    When applying to the University of Maryland, you can list Public Health Science as your intended major. Public Health Science is not a limited enrollment program, and the School of Public Health advisors do not participate in the admissions decision process.

    During your New Student Orientation (https://www.orientation.umd.edu/), you will meet your Public Health Science advising team and register for your first semester of classes.

    Students applying to the PHSC major on the Shady Grove campus should first review all prerequisites for the BS, Public Health Science - Shady Grove. Most Shady Grove applicants will have completed their Associate’s Degree from a Maryland Community College.

You can designate your desired campus (College Park and/or Shady Grove) on your application. The School of Public Health advisors do not participate in the admissions decision process.
