As a doctoral student working with a community action coalition in East Baltimore, SPH alumna Jocelyn Smith Lee, Ph.D.’13, observed firsthand how Black boys and men struggled to navigate issues of trauma, violence, loss and healing. Those observations, which sparked more than a decade of community-engaged research and action to advance racial equity, are the root of her recent storytelling campaign: In All Ways Human.

With gunshot injuries in Washington, D.C. up nearly 20% from this time last year, a new analysis tool developed by a University of Maryland School of Public Health doctoral student is helping district leaders detect surges in gun violence, monitor at-risk groups and understand trends.

This May, the University of Maryland School of Public Health recognized four outstanding members of the SPH community with the Distinguished Terrapin Award, the school's highest honor. The awardees were recognized at the Dean's Recognition Ceremony on May 5, 2023 which was attended by members of the SPH Dean's Council, supporters and friends of the school, along with faculty, staff and students. More than 30 faculty members and students from the University of Maryland School of Public Health, University of Birmingham in England and University College Dublin in Ireland spent three days swapping experiences, sharing research and touring the University of Maryland as part of the first Universitas 21 Health Research Exchange (U21HREx) research symposium held at the University of Maryland School of Public Health in College Park and the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. 

While she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in public health science on May 23, 2023, Taliah Hodges has had little time to rest. That’s because she’s gearing up for the final year of her accelerated BS+MPH program and preparing to become a teaching assistant for a foundational public health course.
