In 2020, the University of Maryland granted employees administrative leave to observe Juneteenth. This day of celebration and reflection commemorates the end of slavery in the United States—two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

Alice Munkhoff Horowitz PhD '92 believes strongly in the power of health literacy to address health inequalities. And with a new gift pledged over five years, Dr. Horowitz will ensure that the Rima E. Rudd Dissertation Research Award in Health Literacy can continue to support the next generation of researchers who advance the science of health literacy.

Taylor Palmer is passionate about community engagement, social justice and combating racial injustice. A senior Behavioral and Community Health major in the School of Public Health, Palmer’s impressive resume includes being in the honors program, serving as an undergraduate teaching assistant, and membership in Eta Sigma Gamma (National Health Education Honorary), Phi Sigma Pi (National Honor Fraternity) and Phi Alpha Epsilon.

On June 2, 2021, President Biden announced the formation of a White House-backed partnership between the University of Maryland’s Maryland Center for Health Equity, the Black Coalition Against COVID and the beauty and personal care brand SheaMoisture to recruit 1,000 Black-owned barber
